Item is a holograph manuscript compiled and extracted by Tyrell from his diaries and other sources in preparation for writing his autobiography. The manuscript was compiled in the 1940s and documents his life from 1858 to 1926. It is interleaved throughout with clippings, invitations, menus, photographs, correspondence and other ephemera.

Only the portion of the autobiography which relates to the 1892 to 1894 barren lands expeditions has been digitized (123 leaves).
"Item is the earliest version of an autobiography included within the fonds of J.B. Tyrrell. A more finished holograph draft of the autobiography, also dating from the 1940s, is included elsewhere in the collection (box 122). The autobiography was never published."
