Item is an autograph manuscript concerning Eskimo spiritual beliefs, particularly as related to Native Chiefs or Doctors. The document was created some time after the winter of 1885 when James W. Tyrrell was hydrographer and meteorological observer at Ashe Inlet. During this time Tyrrell had an opportunity to meet with many of the native people and to learn the Inuktitut language of the eastern Hudson Bay Inuit.
Title transcribed from item.
Another version of these notes was later published in both the 1897 and the 1908 editions of Tyrrell's Across the sub-arctics of Canada Item forms part of the series entitled 'Ashe Inlet files'.
